“My Father often muses that if only if the people who have access to the information were as interested in protecting it, as they as they are in profiting from it, the world would be a much better place. But I’m not here to discuss changing the w o r l d with you… that’s not my remit.” It wasn’t often The Machine was taken by surprise, and her lips quirk up into a smile at the feel of it. “The appearance of ‘the suit’ shouldn’t matter at all… but I’m afraid I’m not one. I’m merely a… concerned third party.”

Mac, predicting his concern had come prepared pulling out a file from her bag and offers it to him, “You like your p r i v a c y Mr. Cage and I appreciate and respect that. so If you decide not to aid me in helping this person. You won’t see me or hear the name Thornhill again.”

She had a point, and she surprised him with having such a unique viewpoint. Or her father, whoever. It was a good viewpoint, one he could almost get behind. “No?” Xander wasn’t disappointed, but when suits usually approached him, it was because they wanted him to try and stop some bad dude who wanted to fuck up the world. “Third party, okay, sure.” He supposed he was a third party, if he was honest with himself, and he squared his shoulders before reaching out for the folder, starting to flip through it.

It was filled with information, both on the person it seemed she wanted him to help, and the forces behind them causing them pain. Xander took note of the name Thornhill, see if he could get Talon to look her up or something, when this was over with. He didn’t usually expect anything in return for doing the Right Thing, but he also didn’t work without a good reason. “Okay, save me the trouble of breaking all this information down. What do you want me to do?” He wasn’t agreeing…yet. Not til he heard the terms, at least.

A small smile fleets across her features before disappearing, if he’d have blinked he would have missed it. The Machine analyses what she said, perhaps she hadn’t explained herself properly. She worked on information, had lived off it in the past. “Humans make their own choices, Mr Cage,” Mac states, with a momentary glance up to meet his gaze, “What we do with the information is not the informations fault.”

“Case in point- I have some information that someones going to be in a lot of trouble. I need someone with your skills, and your devil may care attitude, to help stop that from happening.”

He caught it. He didn’t smile back. “If the information didn’t exist, people couldn’t use it to line their pockets at the expense of the working class. Information’s generated by someone, they’ve always got a reason for it. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes–most times–it isn’t.” The world, and its information, was generated by those who held power in their hands, power over other people, over the little guy. Xander liked to pilfer their pockets and level the playing field, turn the world on the track of becoming a better place.

There it was, the point she was skirting around. “I don’t work for suits,” he said simply, “even pretty ones like yourself.” She hadn’t specified what sort of someone was going to be in trouble, and if it was some bigwig, he didn’t give a flying shit.

“Information is in capable of harm in and of itself. Ideas are neither good nor bad. Only actions cause harm.”

Xander looked at her for a moment, “That’s just not true. People have ideas to topple governments, or break the world in a way it can’t recover from. That’s not a good idea. That eats at your mind, having a bad idea like that, it infects people’s minds, people who share the ideas, until we’ve got another Nazi party on our hands. Information can harm people in ways weapons couldn’t even dream of.”
